April 2017

Minimalist Homeschool | 2017

While Year 1 will be released this Summer, here's a partial year course for the Teens! These kids that were our babies not that long ago, are now becoming the young adults that we get to release out into the great wide world! These next few years are REALLY important for us to not only make sure that they have the traditional education to read, write and figure math but that they will be able-bodied adults with Godly character. We run our year starting in September, breaking for all major holidays, and ending in May. The summer is reserved for lots of outdoor play and family fun! We usually actively do 'school' 4 or 5 days a week - but are always learning through the experiences around us. Feel free to modify the plan to fit your family's needs!

Be sure to get our suggested school supplies list HERE.

Our kids have grown in responsibilities as they have in age, Cleaning House is a GREAT resource in making this happen if you're struggling in this area, but it is incredibly important that your teens are included alongside the adults in their life to learn from them in all topics of life. Home improvement and maintenance, bill pay, grocery shopping, politics discussion- be open to including your teen in these things and more!

Each week we have suggested daily tasks for various categories to cover focusing on BIBLE | READING | WRITING | MATH. Don't feel pressured to check off every item. Some weeks or even days they may be more into it than others. If it's a day they're not into it- that's ok! Let it go! We want to foster a love of learning to last a lifetime, forcing this work can set up a really negative outlook for years to come.

When they're not interested, encourage things like meditation, stretching, some time outside to soak up the sun & fresh air and re-center. Taking care of our responsibilities must be trained now to be the first priority before moving on to "the fun stuff".

Below the core subjects are suggested topics for the ELECTIVE subjects. Keep a minimalist style in your scheduling - each day do just one of the elective projects vs. doing some of every elective each day. These projects are also recommended to be done as a family with all siblings (if applicable) while the daily core subjects are done independently with direct instruction from you.

I suggest you take a peek at the links for the UPCOMING month ahead of time for anything you may need/want to order or pick up. Anything for the elective projects - we aim to do just one elective topic per day, so feel free to move them around for days that the project fits best or you're able to get the needed supplies (if applicable).

Have fun above all! Any questions/issues/concerns - contact us at TheMinimalistHomeschool@gmail.com

March 2017

WEEK 1 : DO DAILY

  1. Bible: Start each day with Bible-- before you begin reading, take some time to practice being still and quiet. This is a great way to help in learning self control and a much needed time to have for everyone as we aim to be listening always for the still, small voice of God. Start by setting a timer for 5 minutes, instruct your kid(s) on what we're doing, and then all sit and remain still and silent until the timer dings. (You can increase this time as you feel is needed for your family.)

  2. Now that our hearts are focused and our bodies are still, read today's devotional and passage from the Bible. We'll be reading through a great kid's series for the next 3 weeks.

    1. Purpose: “Kids could choose to spend their time a lot of different ways. This plan challenges them to use their lives to make a difference! Our culture sends the message to kids that childhood is all about entertainment, sports, self-indulgence, and really just “taking it easy.” God has bigger plans for His children—even the ones in elementary school!”

    2. Set up an account if you haven't already, each day do one more lesson in this devotional. We'll do this Monday through Friday starting now until the end of Week 3. THIS is the plan we're on.

  3. After you've read that, discuss it with your kids. Ask questions, think of how you can apply this in your life. Have the kids journal about what they've learned. Little kids can draw a picture about the message they've heard, the bigger kids can draw a picture, write about what they learned or questions they may have.

    1. BONUS : Watch What's in the Bible on Esther! (This may seem kind of 'babyish' but the What's in the Bible series is AMAZING! My husband and I even have learned a ton from it in a very simple, straightforward manor.)

  4. Reading: It's great to read a fun book and then watch the movie at the end, so that's what we'll do for most of these. Aim to read 1 chapter per day- morning or in the evening, doesn't matter. If you aren't able to read one day, no worries! Some days you may read 2 or 3 chapters- just move at whatever pace works and engages your kiddo!Let's start by reading Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events! I remember my brother's loved these books as kids, and with the new series on Netflix -- all 3 of my kids are obsessed!

  5. WritingSpend time doing some Spelling Practice - do a placement quiz (or two or three) if you'd like, then select the grade level. Each day you'll select the grade your kiddo is working on - then the week we're on - then they can complete the tasks for that day. Level 7 | Level 8

  6. Set up an account at Quill. You can do a placement quiz, and then register an account as an educator. From there you can add a student and assign topics for them to work on. There are dozens of options- have fun with it!

  7. Math: Set up an account at Khan Academy, this will give them missions to work on to learn math skills from how to count up through high school. Engage your kiddo throughout the day in situations that require mathematical skills to navigate and solve - hands on experience is a great help in growing these skills.

FAMILY ELECTIVES : 1 PER DAY

  1. Baking: Let's bake a special breakfast treat – Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Muffins! Yummm! Enjoy! We always try to use 100% real, organic ingredients and go easy on the sugar. Even with a wise and healthy eating plan, it's a great time to treasure and take one day each week to gather in the kitchen and learn to bake a special treat!

  2. History: History is important for learning about the world, the past, trends and lessons to remember. Not every kid will enjoy every single topic in history, but it's important to learn about different civilizations and what they encountered and endured - you may notice your kid(s) taking a particular interest in one area over another. That's great! If your kiddo has a particular fascination in a certain topic, encourage that and let them dig deeper into it. We'll take this day each week to touch on various historical topics in hopes that one will spark an interest in your child.

    1. Pick one movie HERE! or HERE!

  3. Science: Head back to Khan Academy and start learning though their Science Modules.

  4. Handicrafts: There's so many skills in the lost art of Home Ec. THIS site has a great breakdown of 10 skills to work on. Pick one a week to spend some time on- let your Teen really take charge as much as possible and show off their new skills as a loving service to the whole family!

  5. P.E.: Taking care of our bodies and learning about proper nutrition is going to be a big key to the future of your life. We can all work on eating better and keeping our bodies fit. Here's a great 12 week program to strengthen our muscles and get in the routine of keeping our bodies active. See Week 1 here- do this just once a week, or more if you're up to it!

HOLY WEEK : NO SCHOOL

Bible: Even though we're off of school this week, here's a wonderful Bible plan to read together as a family as we focus on Jesus. Sunday we will celebrate Easter, celebrating all that God did for us by sending his son, Jesus, to die for all of us as a forever sacrifice for the sins that we commit far too much. I'm not perfect, and hard as I try, I'll fall short of the Lord over and over again.

Baking: Making these on Easter Sunday is a family tradition, they are a great project to go with the meaning of Easter- and they taste amazing!

Happy Easter! I hope you have a wonderful spring break!

It doesn't have to be formal, it's just a time for honest conversation. Let's take the next few weeks to go into this a little more. Start HERE!

Start by setting a timer for 10 minutes, instruct your kid(s) on what we're doing, and then all sit and remain still and silent until the timer dings. (You can increase this time as you feel is needed for your family.)

  2. Now that our hearts are focused and our bodies are still, read today's devotional and passage from the Bible. Let's continue with our Prayer Devotional HERE! (We should be on Day 11, go ahead and finish up through Day 16 this week)

  3. After you've read that, discuss it with your kids. Ask questions, think of how you can apply this in your life. Have the kids journal about what they've learned. Little kids can draw a picture about the message they've heard, the bigger kids can draw a picture, write about what they learned or questions they may have.

  4. Reading: Continue reading Lemony Snicket's or they can read to younger sibling(s) in The Borrower's with the plan under the Little's tab.

  5. Writing: Do your daily activities on Spelling Practice - LEVEL SEVEN | LEVEL EIGHT

  6. Log in at Quill. Play around with various assignments. If your Teen is a strong writer, or just uninterested in doing these exercises- feel free to do something different! Let them write letters to friends and family, journal, blog about a topic they're passionate about, etc... With only a few weeks of school left, I know my kids are pretty restless and ready to get outside and enjoy the warm weather! I make sure they get the basics done, let them spend time in the areas that interest them, and then refer to this site FULL of additional topics if you need something more. My Big Kid is making me a new comic strip each day to strengthen his writing skills- and they're getting really good! But go with what your kid enjoys- let it be fun! :)

  7. Math: Log in at Khan Academy, complete another assignment. Encourage your Teen to help you out throughout the day with different tasks and put their math skills to work!

FAMILY ELECTIVES : 1 PER DAY

  1. Baking: How about these quick n' easy chocolate cheesecake bites? Mmmmm!

    1. Pick a history based movie HERE! OR browse through this site to learn about many different times and themes of our world's history.

  3. Science: Sit down together and see who can answer the most questions about Human Anatomy

  4. Handicrafts: Keep working on the handicrafts you've been trying so far! Maybe this summer you can even find fairs or festivals to sell some of them at?

  5. P.E.: Head outside to run & play! Get a soccer ball, swim, jump on a trampoline, play tag-- you name it! If the weather's bad- crank some music and have a dance off! Our household bumps Matisyahu daily- some physical exercise and songs of praise all in one! ;)

WEEK 10 : DO DAILY

  1. Bible: Start each day with Bible-- before you begin reading, take some time to practice being still and quiet. Now that our hearts are focused and our bodies are still, let's start. I cannot recommend Heaven for Kids by Randy Alcorn enough! There's many videos on YouTube of him that are great! I have the adult's book too (Heaven) - for older Teens they would probably be ready to dive into that version with you!

After you've read that, discuss it with your kids. Ask questions, think of how you can apply this in your life. Have the kids journal about what they've learned. Little kids can draw a picture about the message they've heard, the bigger kids can draw a picture, write about what they learned or questions they may have.
