Sometimes we stray from 'the plan'...

When I said our schedule had to be easy, flexible and fun-- I wasn't kidding! While we're doing our published Minimalist Homeschool plan -- the electives we have listed are fun as we take on one a day usually -- but they are totally open to change based on your family! Take our week for example:

Monday : We didn't do any specific electives. No biggie.

Tuesday : I baked muffins with the kids and we swapped the week's science project out for one of our own. Making toothpaste! My kids can be SO bad with their personal hygiene! *yuck* We've moved with a very minimalist approach to our daily routines and have a simple hygiene routine for them... but it still requires daily instruction. Some say this never hoes away... oh joy. But I looked at our 12 year old's teeth and that was that. We usually do oil pulling by swishing coconut oil each morning and evening and then brushing with coconut oil too. From time to time I order this amazing Brushing Rinse and we'll use that for a bit. Then other times I feel the need to whip up a tooth paste and add in some different ingredients to boost our dental health.

Here's what we did for this batch (which filled up 3 little containers):

2 cups organic coconut oil (we place the container in a bowl of hot water to liquefy it)

3 capsules of activated charcoal

I just used what we had on hand, I was out of bentonite clay but would have added some of that too!

We just mixed all the ingredients in a big bowl and poured into the containers. It will leave a mess behind in the sink so the 12 year old is in charge of rinsing the sink out with hot water after they all scrub their teeth.

Science -- Done!

Today : For history we're going to watch this great documentary the hubby and I just finished on the exodus of Moses and the Jews from Egypt. (currently on Netflix too!)

Moral of the story -- hit the core topics, enjoy the electives if your kiddos are into it- this helps to open their minds to various topics in pursuit of passions and interest, and feel free to change it up with whatever your family is into!

We hope you all are having a great week! I love seeing how many families have been looking for the same types of homeschool plans as our family-- I can't wait to grow and share more with The Minimalist Homeschool!
